BSC USDT transfer notifications, delivered as webhooks

Get a signed webhook when a BNB Smart Chain address sends or receives USDT BEP-20. With sub-second blocks, Chainhook usually delivers about 7 seconds after the transfer.

How USDT BEP-20 webhooks work

At sub-second block times, polling BscScan or a public RPC for each address quickly runs into rate limits, and eth_getLogs ranges have to be paged carefully so no block is skipped. Chainhook scans every block once, waits 15 confirmations, and pushes only the transfers that match your addresses.

  1. Register the address

    Create a webhook with network: "bsc", type: "token" and the address you want to watch. The signing secret is returned once.

  2. Chainhook waits for confirmations

    Every BNB Smart Chain block is scanned. A matching USDT transfer is held until it is 15 blocks deep, about 7 seconds.

  3. Your endpoint gets a signed POST

    A transfer.detected event arrives with an X-Webhook-Signature header. Failed attempts are retried automatically, up to 3 attempts in total, waiting 1 minute, then 5 minutes between attempts.

Verify the signature

X-Webhook-Signature is a hex HMAC-SHA256 of the raw body, keyed with your webhook's secret. Reject any request where it doesn't match.

import crypto from 'node:crypto';
import express from 'express';

const app = express();

app.post(
  '/webhooks/chainhook',
  express.raw({ type: 'application/json' }),
  (req, res) => {
    const signature = req.get('X-Webhook-Signature') ?? '';
    const expected = crypto
      .createHmac('sha256', process.env.CHAINHOOK_SIGNING_SECRET)
      .update(req.body)
      .digest('hex');

    const valid =
      signature.length === expected.length &&
      crypto.timingSafeEqual(Buffer.from(signature), Buffer.from(expected));

    if (!valid) {
      return res.sendStatus(401);
    }

    const event = JSON.parse(req.body);
    // Skip event.id if you've already processed it.

    res.sendStatus(200);
  },
);

Crediting USDT deposits safely

Eighteen decimals, not six

USDT on BSC has 18 decimals. Code that assumes 6, as on Ethereum or TRON, will be off by a factor of 10¹². Read decimals from each event, or use the amount string directly.

A Binance-issued peg

Tether doesn't issue USDT on BNB Smart Chain. The token at 0x55d398326f99059ff775485246999027b3197955 is issued by Binance and backed 1:1 by USDT. It's the USDT that exchanges and wallets use on BSC.

Watch for lookalike tokens

Fake tokens with the USDT symbol are common on BSC. Chainhook only reports the contract above, so a spoofed "USDT" transfer never reaches your endpoint.

Credit once per transfer

Delivery is at least once. Store the event id, or transaction_hash with transfer_index, and skip events you have already credited.

How do I detect an incoming USDT BEP-20 payment?

Create a webhook with network: "bsc", type: "token", direction: "in" and the receiving 0x address. Each confirmed USDT deposit arrives as a transfer.detected event.

Why does USDT on BSC have 18 decimals?

The BEP-20 contract was deployed with 18 decimals, unlike Tether's own 6-decimal contracts on Ethereum and TRON. The token value is the same; only the integer scale differs.

What is the USDT BEP-20 contract address?

0x55d398326f99059ff775485246999027b3197955, with 18 decimals.

How fast are BSC USDT webhooks?

Chainhook waits 15 blocks, about 7 seconds, then sends the event. Most payments are reported within seconds.

Can I watch the same address for USDT on Ethereum too?

Yes. Create a second webhook with network: "ethereum" for the same address. Each network is watched separately.
