Polygon USDC transfer notifications, delivered as webhooks

Get a signed webhook when a Polygon address sends or receives PoS-bridged USDC. Chainhook waits 64 blocks, about 2 minutes, then posts the transfer.

How USDC ERC-20 webhooks work

Polygon blocks arrive every second or two, and short reorgs have historically been more common than on Ethereum. A home-grown poller has to re-check recent blocks and undo credits when they change. Chainhook waits 64 blocks first, so an event you receive is already settled.

  1. Register the address

    Create a webhook with network: "polygon", type: "token" and the address you want to watch. The signing secret is returned once.

  2. Chainhook waits for confirmations

    Every Polygon block is scanned. A matching USDC transfer is held until it is 64 blocks deep, about 2 minutes.

  3. Your endpoint gets a signed POST

    A transfer.detected event arrives with an X-Webhook-Signature header. Failed attempts are retried automatically, up to 3 attempts in total, waiting 1 minute, then 5 minutes between attempts.

Verify the signature

X-Webhook-Signature is a hex HMAC-SHA256 of the raw body, keyed with your webhook's secret. Reject any request where it doesn't match.

import crypto from 'node:crypto';
import express from 'express';

const app = express();

app.post(
  '/webhooks/chainhook',
  express.raw({ type: 'application/json' }),
  (req, res) => {
    const signature = req.get('X-Webhook-Signature') ?? '';
    const expected = crypto
      .createHmac('sha256', process.env.CHAINHOOK_SIGNING_SECRET)
      .update(req.body)
      .digest('hex');

    const valid =
      signature.length === expected.length &&
      crypto.timingSafeEqual(Buffer.from(signature), Buffer.from(expected));

    if (!valid) {
      return res.sendStatus(401);
    }

    const event = JSON.parse(req.body);
    // Skip event.id if you've already processed it.

    res.sendStatus(200);
  },
);

Crediting USDC deposits safely

This is bridged USDC

Chainhook watches 0x2791bca1f2de4661ed88a30c99a7a9449aa84174, the USDC bridged from Ethereum through the Polygon PoS bridge, often shown as USDC.e.

Circle's native USDC is a different token

Native USDC on Polygon (0x3c499c542cef5e3811e1192ce70d8cc03d5c3359) is not detected yet. If your users send from an exchange, check which USDC it withdraws before relying on this webhook.

Six decimals

Both versions of USDC on Polygon use 6 decimals. Use the amount string or scale amount_raw by decimals.
